Fish take-away...Italian style!

Take-aways are often associated with fast-food, but not so in Italy where you can often pick up a three course meal

Linguine with scampi followed by a Mediterranean fry up of prawns and calamari may not be quite what the doctor ordered, but as we all know fish can be cooked in a myriad of ways and most of it healthily!  Think Mediterranean diet – seared fillet of sea bass, sea food paella, grilled scallops, prawn kebabs….
I wasn’t a big fish eater until I discovered L’Accademia del Mare in Camucia, but ever since I walked in and saw not only the wonderful display of fresh fish, but the mega-displays of cooked platters to eat in or take away, I am hooked (excuse the pun!)
The biggest problem is always what to choose: there is an abundance of antipasti, an excellent selection of ready-made pasta sauces for primi and a mouth-watering display of beautifully presented secondi from baked, to  stewed, to fried. The choice is endless…
Antipasti
Secondi
If you like to be creative in the kitchen, the fresh fish  - displayed on ice across the whole width of the shop - is exactly that and at least half of it is from the sea, caught, as opposed to farmed.  The selection – weather permitting – is always excellent.
The takeaways do not come cheap, but nor are they extortionate.  As far as I’m concerned a ready-made meal of this quality is worth every penny, as was the tip for re-heating the baked platters: heat your oven to 180°. Once it’s arrived at this temperature, turn it off and place your fish inside. After 10 minutes it will be ready to eat, (but it won’t be re-cooked which can sometimes change the flavours).  It works perfectly!
L’Accademia del Mare can be found in Viale Regina Elena, 47 in Camucia – just before the station on the left hand (opposite the electrical shop). One can place orders via telephone. Tel: 334 99 88 400.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday - 7:00-13:30 / 16:30-19:30
